Title: Adaptive Optics Facility and the Integral Field Spectrograph MUSE at the VLT-UT4

Speaker: Fuyan Bian (边福彦,欧洲南方天文台)

Biography: Dr. Fuyan Bian, currently is a Support Astronomer at VLT/UT4 and an instrument Scientist of MUSE and HAWK-I, He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from Tsinghua University and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona in 2013. From 2013 to 2018, he held the position of Stromlo Fellow at the Australian National University. In 2018, he joined the European Southern Observatory (ESO) as a Faculty/Staff Astronomer based in Chile. His research interests are galaxy formation and evolution, high redshift galaxies and quasars, and cosmic reionization.

Abstract: In this talk, I will present the Adaptive Optics Facility (AOF) and the MUSE instrument at VLT/UT4. AOF is the new generation cutting-edge adaptive optics system for the instruments at UT4. With the high-performance deformable secondary mirror and 4 laser guide stars system, AOF enables to correct atmospheric turbulence effects on the optical wavelength, facilitating the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) in capturing remarkably sharper images in either seeing enhanced mode or full-AO mode. MUSE is an Integral Field Spectrograph located at the Nasmyth B focus of UT4. It has a modular structure composed of 24 identical integral-field units (lFU) a near-contiguous 1 squared arcmin field of view in Wide Field Mode (WM) and a 7.5 × 7.5 arcsecond field of view in Narrow Field Mode (NFM). It enables a wide range of science from the solar system exoplanets, galaxy formation, and evolution, to cosmology.
